Indian Meatball Curry

This is the result of being extra, searching for a recipe when you already have a simple curry using curry powder and ready made beef balls at hand. But nope. You decide to search for Indian meatball curry from scratch, and that includes making your own meatballs.

The outcome was unexpected, it was like one of those curries you have at a north Indian restaurant. Not too much heat. It is creamy, tangy and full of flavour. The only downside to this is how to make the meatballs soft. I probably mixed it too much, or boiled too long.

The family loves it! Big win when my kids say it's yummy. Cos these fellas are not generous with their compliments.

I got the recipe here, with simple spices you'd already have in your pantry.

Indian Meatball Curry

For the meatballs:
500g minced beef
1 tsp grated garlic (I think I added a bit more)
1 tsp grated ginger
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/4 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp tumeric powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp cumin powder
2 tbsp breadcrumbs
1 egg
1/2 tsp sale
1/4 tsp pepper

For the curry:
1 big onion, sliced
1 tbsp grated garlic
1 tbsp grated ginger
1 cup tomatoes, chopped finely
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup cilantro chopped
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1/4 tsp tumeric powder
1/2 tsp garam masala (I added a bit more)
1/2 cup yoghurt
Water/Milk, for the gravy
(I also added a tbsp curry powder cos it wasn't hot enough)
  1. Make the meatballs and set aside.
  2. Fry the onions till soft. Add the grated garlic and ginger, and tomatoes. Fry until the tomatoes are softened and separates from the oil. This will take quite a while.
  3. Add the curry powder and fry. Add a bit of water if it's too dry.
  4. Add the yoghurt and water/milk. At this juncture, my spices were pretty coarse as I didn't use the powder form, so I poured the whole gravy into the blender and blitzed everything. Helps with the onions and tomatoes too for a smooth gravy. Add back to the pot and cook it down further.
  5. Add meatballs into the curry. Website said not to add when it's boiling, so turn down the heat and add a bit of water/milk before the meatballs.
  6. Cook only until the meatballs are cooked, not too long.

Daiso Ramekins

Finally finally went to Daiso!! Wanted to go there for ages already! The first thing I came in, went to the cooking section. Found my ramekins! But they're not white. Oh wells. Can't be choosy for $2 ramekins! There were white ones, but super small white ramekins. And pie tarts too! Oooh so tempting! But I don't know when I'll make tarts hurhur. Actually I'm still thinking what I should bake using these ramekins. I remember having one of those "I wish I had ramekins right now" moments but I can't remember when. Maybe when I was making lava cake . Daiso is evil. It's so cheap you just feel like coming back again! Oh and did I mention there's a $2 weighing scale?! Measures up to a kilo but that's quite alright for baking isn't it! I mean, $2!! Dirt cheap lah. Not sure about the accuracy though. Didn't do much cleaning last weekend, very much spent lazing around at home just like what weekends should be like. I love being at ho...

Apam Balik

I love apam balik. The soft one, with lots of corn. So when @khairulaming posted this on his instagram, I bookmarked it. The recipe is not too much until you get sick of eating apam balik, but I do feel it needs some tweaks to get the pancake king version. But not bad for a first try. 2 cups flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 2 tbsp melted butter 1 1/4 cups water 1 egg Additional butter for the pan I do feel it needs some salt, more sugar and I shouldn't have liberally made it so thick HAHA. The pan is important too, I kinda burnt some parts of the pancake. Got them bubbles!! This recipe made 2 large pancakes. Also, the filling needs to be sprinkled with sugar liberally (read: 3 tbsp or so), my first try wasn't enough. Pancake was soft even for the next few days after that (kept in the fridge then reheated in the microwave). Husband found it to be acceptable, but I was kinda not okay with it but ohwells. I can tweak it ...

Lontong Goreng Tomyam

When Husband's not around, I become more hardworking HAHAHA. I clean more, I cook more. Saturday I made lontong goreng tomyam for breakfast, and yesterday I made my first ever chicken rice. I even have ingredients to make aglio olio, which I think I'll make either tonight or early tomorrow morning for breakfast. The lontong goreng was a pure experiment, no inferences from recipes and all but it turned out good. Not sure if it's something Husband would eat haha! Lontong Goreng Tomyam 1 packet lontong instant Adabi, cut in cubes 4 tbsp tomyam paste 2 eggs, pre-scrambled Handful of mushrooms Chicken breast, sliced Coriander leaves (I didn't have lemongrass or lime leaves) 1/2-1 tsp salt Fry the tomyam paste in some oil, then add the mushrooms and chicken to cook them. Add some water so the paste doesn't dry up. Add in the scrambled eggs then the lontong cubes and fry until mixed well. For yesterday's chicken rice, I adapted slightly from a reci...
